My qualifications are Doctor of Medicine (University of Glasgow), Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and Fellow (and Honorary Fellow) of the Royal College of Psychiatrists. I am Emeritus Professor of Old Age Psychiatry at the University of Manchester and a Consultant Old Age Psychiatrist at Oxford Health NHS (National Health Service) Foundation Trust. I was previously (from 1993
until 2023) an Honorary Consultant at the Greater Manchester Mental Health NHS Foundation Trust.
I am a licensed medical practitioner. I qualified in Medicine at the University of Glasgow in 1980 and held a number of posts in general medicine, gaining experience of treating patients with general medical conditions, including delirium. My General Medical Council number is 2547325.
I trained in general and old age psychiatry at the Maudsley Hospital in London from 1983, becoming a Senior Lecturer (the university equivalent of a consultant) in 1992. From 1993, I was Professor of Old Age Psychiatry at The University of Manchester (emeritus status since October 2023). From 2010 until October 2023, I was the National Clinical Director for Dementia (and Older People’s Mental Health) for the NHS in England. In 2015, I was awarded a CBE for services to Dementia. In my role as a clinical academic in the University, I
have led an extensive research programme, leading a number of clinical trials and I was involved in teaching.
I have published over 400 academic papers and have authored/edited 32 books on the subject of dementia and older people’s mental health. My full CV is available on request.
I am actively involved in clinical practice. I am approved under Section 12 of The Mental Health Act 1983 (amended 2007) indicating specialist expertise in the assessment and treatment of mental health disorders.
Since commencing medico-legal work, I have completed over 650 reports across a range of issues including assessments for: Mental Capacity; Testamentary Capacity (in person and retrospective), the Court of Protection; Fitness to Stand Trial; Medical Negligence; Insurance Claims and the Coroner. I am experienced in appearing as an Expert Witness in Court and am a Member of the Expert Witness Institute. Cited cases are available on request.
