About Me

Summary
I qualified as a Doctor of Medicine (University of Glasgow), Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and Fellow of the Royal College of Psychiatrists. I am Professor of Old Age Psychiatry at the University of Manchester and an Honorary Consultant Old Age Psychiatrist in the Oxford Health NHS Foundation Trust. I am a licensed medical practitioner. I am registered with the Information Commissioners Office and I am a member of the Expert Witness Institute.
I qualified in Medicine at the University of Glasgow in 1980 and held a number of posts in general medicine, gaining experience of treating patients with general medical conditions.
I trained in general and old age psychiatry at the Maudsley Hospital in London from 1983, becoming a Senior Lecturer (the University equivalent of a consultant) in 1992. Since 1993, I have been Professor of Old Age Psychiatry at the University of Manchester.
In 2015, I was awarded a CBE for services to Dementia and the lifetime Achievement Award from the Faculty of Old Age Psychiatry at the Royal College of Psychiatrists.
In my role as a clinical academic in the University, I have led an extensive research programme over a number of years (amounting to some £40 million in research funding) and have led a number of clinical trials which have changed clinical practice. I have published over 400 academic papers and have authored/edited 32 books on the subject of dementia and older people’s mental health. I was Editor in Chief of the International Journal of Geriatric Psychiatry for twenty years until 2018. I have also been involved in teaching students from a variety of disciplines. My full CV is available on request.
I am involved in clinical practice in my host Trust in Oxford carrying out weekly clinics where I assess, diagnose and treat people with mental health problems, in particular dementia. I am approved under Section 12 of The Mental Health Act 1983 (amended 2007) indicating specialist expertise in the assessment and treatment of mental health disorders.
I have been involved in providing over 300 expert medical reports over a number of years. I have appeared in court for the coroner, in the Court of Protection and in contentious probate cases. Three citations appear below. In developing this aspect of my professional practice, I have provided expert reports on issues relating to older adult mental health and dementia. These include assessments of testamentary capacity (including retrospective assessments) in contentious probate, fitness to appear in Court and the impact of mental health on ability to work. I have regular interactions with Solicitors and Barristers. Testimonials are available on request.
